Hands On Sight Word Activities-
- Write sight words on sticky notes and have your child slap them with a fly swatter.
- Sight Word Password - write sight words on a sticky note or index card and put them on the fridge, doors, pantry, etc. To “unlock” the door they must say a few of the sight words.
- Where’s the Bear – Label Dixie cups with sight words. Have your child read a word. Pick up the cup that was read and see if the bear is under that word.
- Parking Lot – Draw parking lot places and fill in each spot with a sight word. Have your child park the car in the designated word you have called out.
- Popsicle Stick Puzzles – Press two Popsicle sticks side by side and write out a sight word. Separate the sticks and mix up all the puzzle pieces. As your child creates each puzzle make sure they read each sight word made.
- Build sight words with play-doh
- Beach Ball – Write sight words on a beach ball. Pass the ball back and forth. When your child catches the ball, they have to read the sight words their fingers are touching.
- Sight Word Go Fish – Instead of cards use sight words written on note cards and play Go Fish.
- Write letters on Mega Blocks and build sight words.
Increasing Letter & Handwriting Awareness
- Go on a treasure hunt around your house (inside and/or outside) to find items that begin with each letter sound.
- Sing songs or nursery rhymes using only the letter sound instead of the words.
- ALWAYS practice writing their first names in upper- and lower-case letters—not just upper case (capital letters). They will be learn to write upper case and lower-case letters. They will learn to recognize both upper- and lower-case letters
- Practice writing the letters.
- Look in books, magazines, etc. to find both the upper- and lower-case letter of the week. Always go from left to right as you do when you read. They can even use a highlighter to mark the letters they find. This is also a great review exercise for the previous letters we have learned. For those students who can recognize the letters, this is a great way to start exposing them to words. Have them find and highlight the word that has the letter in it.
- READ to your child. Read a variety of books to them. Ask questions about what you are reading- use “what” and “who” questions at first. Then move on to questions that require higher thinking- “where, when, how and why”. Talk about the pictures. Point to the words as you are reading. All these things increase awareness which will help them learn to read.
